The Responsible Mineral Initiative or RMI plays a crucial role in promoting responsible sourcing of the minerals across the globe. The major aim of the RMI is to address the human right concerns and environmental impacts associated with the mineral sourcing such as extraction and mineral trade which are greatly used in many industries like electronic, automotive, jewelery, aerospace, and many more. Hence, it is essential to understand that RMI comes up with various initiatives and programs to enrich the process of conflict mineral compliance, fostering a transparent and ethical global supply chain. Hence, this blog explores the RMI’s upcoming AMRT 1.2 & EMRT 2.0 releases significantly.
Understanding AMRT & EMRT:
The Additional Minerals Reporting Template (AMRT) and the Extended Minerals Reporting Template (EMRT) are the well-established and standard tools offered by the Responsible Minerals Initiative or RMI. The main aim of the AMRT is to cover the minerals which are not included under the conflict minerals such as (Cobalt). However, the EMRT focuses on the extensive data and supporting the companies in assessing and reporting the responsible minerals across the broader mineral supply chains.
RMI’s Latest Update On AMRT & EMRT:
The PRT (Pilot Reporting Template) of the AMRT which was initially released to support the companies in regard to reporting like sourcing the minerals responsibly or the disclosure. So, after almost two years, the PRT has successfully transitioned from its pilot phase to the newly formed AMRT. The change in the name of the template reflects the report’s official status encouraging the suppliers to participate actively as there can be possibility as many companies could have seen the PRT as an optional or unofficial option to opt for.
Hence, with the change in status from PRT to AMRT, the RMI expects increased numbers in the activation and engagement of members or suppliers as it will greatly help in conducting conflict mineral surveys for 2024. Also, this transition pushes RMI to standardize the compliance for betterment of responsible sourcing.
The latest version of the AMRT is scheduled to release by October 4, 2024 and includes a notable change where the file supports the German language.
EMRT:
Apart from AMRT, the RMI has also given updates on EMRT. The new version of EMRT includes copper, lithium, nickel, and natural graphite with the other minerals leading to a broader scope of the minerals to be covered which are beneficial to many industries especially battery manufacturing industry. The new EMRT version of 2.0 is expected to release by April 2026 featuring under the “mine-level facility” tab.
Hence, the new version of EMRT is in response to the increasing demand for the regulatory demands especially from the EU Battery Regulation likely increasing the standards of the reporting and tracing the crucial minerals. Also, the expansion of the EMRT helps the RMI to identify the engaged and active participants to boost the transparency and compliance efforts.
