REACH ROHS Compliance simplified!

RoHS Compliance has been in the industry since 2003. Most electrical and electronic companies have done RoHS Compliance to address this regulation and make their products compliant. The RoHS recast has made the process of compliance stricter by adding this regulation as part of the CE mark regulation and specifying the process required for compliance. Just when you thought it was safe, there comes RoHS recast with 4 more new substances to track. Is your company RoHS Compliant?

The first step to know whether your company complies with the RoHS regulations is to understand its scope. A business that primarily deals with electronic and electrical items would broadly come under this directive. This directive mandates that any company that deals with products that function on electrical currents and electromagnetic fields will be a subject of this compliance. Even those companies that handle products that are used to generate, transfer, and measure such currents are also included. Any product that is beyond these two specifications will not come under this regulation.

There are certain substances that are restricted to safeguard human health and the ecosystem in general. Therefore, the objective of the RoHS Compliance is to reduce the negative effects of the following elements:

What substances are restricted in the RoHS directive?

Initially, there were six restricted substances but now it has grown to the tune of ten substances.

RoHS – 1

It was the first version of the RoHS directive. In this regulation, the following substances were restricted:

  • Cadmium
  • Hexavalent chromium
  • Mercury
  • Lead
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers
  • Polybrominated diphenyls

These substances were permitted only up to a level of 0.1% except cadmium which was even more restricted at 0.01%. This directive meant that any material used above the permitted levels cannot trade in the European markets. Companies may try to leverage any exempted applications if at all they choose to place their goods in the market.

REACH RoHS Compliance got a little more stringent once the first version was withdrawn and a recast, which was named RoHS 2, came into effect. This directive had additional restricted substances, use of technical files, and other statutory requirements.

RoHS – 2

In extension to the first set of restricted materials, the following were added:

  • Benzyl butyl phthalate
  • Diisobutyl phthalate
  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate
  • Dibutyl phthalate

Exemptions from RoHS Compliance

Not all electronic products need to comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive. There are some product classifications and applications that need not conform with the REACH RoHS compliance. Most of the military, scientific, medical, renewable energy, medical, and industrial equipment are exempt from this regulation.

In addition to this, spare parts for such equipment placed in the market before July 1st, 2006 are free from this EU directive.

You can check whether your company is exempted or fall under the purview of the regulation on the EU’s RoHS site. There you might find out the extent to which RoHS compliance is relevant to your business.
