EU REACH SVCH List Has Added New Set Of Nine Substances

The ever-changing REACH compliance is again updated with nine new hazardous substances harmful to humankind and the environment. These substances were added to the EU EU REACH’s candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). So, now the candidate list of EU REACH’s SVHC stands out with 233 entries of chemical substances which is now an additional challenge for the supply chains. It is because if any company includes even 0.1% weight or one metric ton of the SVHC chemicals, the business needs to notify their downstream users to practice and abide by the REACH regulation for seamless processing. Hence, in this blog, we will briefly look into the newly added substances under REACH SVHC.

Nine Newly Added Substances In REACH SVHC:

The newly added substances under the REACH SVHC are,

Newly Added Substance Reason For Inclusion
1,1′-[ethane-1,2-diylbisoxy]bis[2,4,6-tribromobenzene] Very persistent & bioaccumulative (REACH Article 57 e)
4,4′-sulphonyldiphenol Toxic for reproduction (Article 57 c); Endocrine disrupting properties (Article 57 f – environment); Endocrine disrupting properties (Article 57 f – human health)
2,2′,6,6′-tetrabromo-4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol Carcinogenic (Article 57 a)
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) tetrabromophthalate (individual isomers/combinations) Very persistent and very bioaccumulative (Article 57 e)
Barium diboron tetraoxide Toxic for reproduction (Article 57 c)
Melamine Equivalent level of concern having probable serious effects to human health (Article 57 f – human health); Equivalent level of concern having probable serious effects to the environment (Article 57 f – environment)
Isobutyl 4-hydroxybenzoate Endocrine disrupting properties (Article 57 f – human health)
2,2,3,3,5,5,6,6-octafluoro-4-(1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropan-2-yl)morpholine and 2,2,3,3,5,5,6,6-octafluoro-4-(heptafluoropropyl)morpholine Very persistent and very bioaccumulative (Article 57 e)
Perfluoroheptanoic acid and its salts Toxic for reproduction (Article 57 c); Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (Article 57 d); Very persistent and very bioaccumulative (Article 57 e); Equivalent level of concern having probable serious effects to human health (Article 57 f – human health); Equivalent level of concern having probable serious effects to the environment (Article 57 f – environment)

These substances find its application in daily products. It is also to be noted that ECHA’s Member State Committee has given confirmation that these substances are added to the Candidate list making a total of 233 entries in which some are chemical groups.

Hence, the supply chains and the downstream users can expect that these chemicals can be found in the authorization list in future making the companies liable for authorization and approvals from the authorities of European Commission.

As the EU REACH SHVC list is being updated regularly, the companies are ought to re-evaluate their products as per the compliance and re-collect the sufficient data from the suppliers. Sunstream helps in managing these processes efficiently through their professionals including the service for conflict mineral compliance through proper data collection, verification, and related analyses.
